M365 Copilot Available to Schools and Universities – Jan 2024

Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 has been added to Microsoft 365 plans for academic institutions that have Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions.
+ Windows Server per VM licensing questions.

KEY POINTS

Microsoft 365 Copilot for Academic Institutions:

🟢 Microsoft 365 Copilot, previously available for enterprise clients, is now accessible to educational institutions.
🟢 It can be added to Microsoft 365 E3, E5, A3, and A5 plans (academic equivalents of E3 and E5).
🟢 The minimum requirement is 300 users per tenant, not per company.
🟢 The cost is $30 (or about £23-24) per user per month, amounting to approximately $108,000 per year for a minimum of 300 licenses.
🟢 There is a demand for Microsoft to make Copilot available in the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program, reduce minimum user requirements, and extend availability to Microsoft 365 Business plans.

Challenges and Requests from Educational Institutions:

🟢 Smaller educational institutions and schools express concerns about the high costs, making Copilot accessible mainly to larger, private schools.
🟢 There is a push for Microsoft to lower costs and make Copilot more accessible to smaller institutions.

Rumours and Speculations:

🟢 Unverified rumours suggest Microsoft might make changes to Copilot's availability and pricing in the first quarter of 2024, possibly around April, but there is no confirmation.
🟢 There are also discussions about Microsoft potentially phasing out the Enterprise Agreement program by 2026, although this is speculative and has been a recurring topic for several years.

Windows Server Licensing per Virtual Machine:

🟢 Windows Server can be licensed per virtual machine if purchased with Software Assurance, and all client access licenses also have Software Assurance.
🟢 The minimum licensing requirement per virtual machine is eight single-core licenses.
🟢 There are complexities in licensing when mixing legacy and new virtual machines, especially in non-Hyper-V environments like VMware.
🟢 Each licensing scenario, sometimes even each cluster, must be assessed individually.
🟢 It's important to compare commercial options not just at a single point in time but over a 3 to 5-year period due to the accumulation of subscription costs.
